Donor Spotlight
ConocoPhillips—A Dedicated Partner
of the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts.
ConocoPhillips continues as a major sponsor of the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts Ushering in the Arts (UITA) program. UITA provides trained, customer-service oriented volunteers to every event within the Center. ConocoPhillip's decades long partnership with the Center helps to provide these volunteer services to Anchorage's performing arts community, allowing our Resident Companies (and all users of the facility) to save thousands of dollars annually. There are currently 348 trained volunteers in the program with hundreds more people on the waiting list.
Gina Luckey, of ConocoPhillips, presents the company's 2013 contribution supporting the Alaska Center for the Performing Art's Ushering in the Arts program to ACPA President Nancy Harbour. Thank you ConocoPhillips!

Memorial Spotlight: Jeannine Lyerly
Beloved, long time Ushering in the Arts volunteer Jeannine Lyerly passed on to her "next journey" with friends at her bedside on September 23, 2012 after a brief illness from pancreatic cancer.

When Jeannine was a teenager, she assisted with the distribution of rationing stamps during World War II. The spirit of volunteerism followed her to Anchorage where she was a supporter of the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts and a dedicated member of the Center's Ushering in the Arts program. Her life as an usher began at a potluck meeting in the Pioneer School House and continued for the next 27 years.

Jeannine Lyerly and Julie Millington |
A friend once described Jeannine as "a temporary believer," which Jeannine interpreted as her need to move between passions, to avoid burn out and to keep things interesting. Therefore, Jeannine had a variety of interests and programs she was associated with. In addition to her years of service to the Center, she also volunteered for the Anchorage Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Anchorage Museum, Health Fairs throughout the State, the Alaska Botanical Garden, and ran the road cleanup crew for the UITA program for many years. She loved challenging games like the New York Times crossword, jigsaw and Sudoku puzzles. Jeannine was always chasing after new learning experiences and activities.
When asked why she kept ushering and volunteering at the Center, she replied, "I have fun, new experiences, and get to learn and enjoy it all. I love providing service to and interacting with patrons. I thrive on the creativity of the performers and staff, and love my relationships with the Center staff, performers and ushers. Ushering also allows me to broaden my interests by experiencing programs I could not otherwise attend. And, it gets me off my duff!"

Staff Spotlight: Kevin McClear
Kevin McClear is the production manager for the Elvera Voth Hall and the lobby areas for the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts. You may hear Kevin before you see him. At nearly seven feet tall, Kevin tells us he often sings folk songs as he works so he doesn't startle people if they happen upon him.
Kevin has worked at the Center for nearly four years. He started as an employee in the maintenance department and was promoted to production several years ago. This, however, is not Kevin's first job in the theatre; he was the technical director for Alaska Theatre of Youth and a stagehand in this building. His earliest work in production was when he was just a kid, helping his parents stow cable after musical productions in Sitka, Alaska.
Kevin was born in Minnesota and raised in Sitka with the exception of the months in which his family lived in Albania while his parents volunteered as aid workers in that country. Kevin and his family traveled around the world twice before he went off to college at St. Olaf in Northfield, Minnesota. Kevin earned a Bachelor of Art degree in Stories and Society. Kevin is married to Shannon McClear; together they perform and sing in the local Renaissance Festival each summer.
